Filters have the effect to remove particulates from the water. Fixed media/synthetic media filters attempt to optimize the surface area available for bacteria to adhere to and further collect bacteria. Bacteria will often cling together and form a "floc".
Fixed media filters can be made from natural materials including peat and waste coco husks, or synthetic media including plastic or woven fibers.
